Harrowing HORROR WITH A HUMANe CHARACTER.
As a horror filmmaker I am fascinated by the human body; our fleshy shell, a gateway to pleasure and pain. In our current society the mind is often elevated above the body, but I believe that the mind is nothing more than a man made construct to make life more than it actually is. A desperate attempt to disguise the fact that we are nothing more than dying, decaying and finite flesh. And what happens when our body betrays us? When we lose control over what makes us ourselves? What will be left of us then?
With my work I look for the answers to these questions. By involving social issues, such as feminism and female body integrity, in my fictional worlds, I try to press my finger on the sore, inflamed spots of society. I do this by letting the viewer step into the shoes of raw and resilient female characters. Real horror heroines, full of strength, but also with imperfections. Real people of flesh and blood.
With my films I embrace my favorite genre, horror, with both arms. Nevertheless, I ignore her clichés. The body horror is not a filler for the lack of plot or message. Despite their violent nature, my films are not bloody messes of exploitation films; in reality, beneath the horror there are gripping stories with a humane character.
